Madison Woman Sentenced for Tax Crime

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 13, 2011

Madison, Wis. - John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Ashley Heim, 28, Madison, Wis., was sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Barbara B. Crabb to six months in prison, followed by a 180-day placement in a halfway house, for filing a false Form 1040A with the Internal Revenue Service on February 6, 2009. Heim pleaded guilty to this charge on October 4, 2011.

In calendar year 2008, Heim worked for two separate employers. One of the employers did not deduct any federal income tax, while the other deducted only $574. When Heim completed her Form 1040A, she falsely claimed that $4,250 in federal income tax had been deducted for that year, and provided false W-2 forms in support of her claim.

Heim admitted to an IRS agent that she knowingly submitted a false Form 1040A. As part of the plea agreement, the United States agreed to dismiss two similar counts from 2007 and 2008. Heim was also held responsible for her role in helping others file false tax returns.

The charges against Heim were the result of an investigation conducted by the Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation Division. The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Rita M. Rumbelow.
